ON BLUE LIGHT

You probably know about UV rays, but what about blue light? When you hear ‘blue light’, you may think of electronic devices and digital screens, but that’s only part of the story.

WHAT IS BLUE LIGHT?

Light itself is composed of non-visible and visible light. UV light is an example of non-visible light that is emitted from the sun.

Visible light, on the other hand, is light our eyes see as colours – red, green, yellow, orange and blue light.

Blue light appears as blue-turquoise or blue-violet light.

IS BLUE LIGHT HARMFUL?

The Blue-turquoise range within the light spectrum actually has beneficial effects on your overall wellbeing amoungst other areas helpsn to regulate your sleep/wake cycle1.

But the blue-violet light part can be harmful to our eyes2along with potentially causing eye strain and fatigue. Overexposure to harmful blue violet light, especially outside in the sun and through modern LED internal lighting, along with our ever increasing life expectancy is why protecting your vision has never been more important.

2In vitro photobiology experiments conducted by Essilor and Paris Vision Institute. Primary retinal pigment epithelium cells were photosensitized with A2E, a major component of the age pigment lipofuscin. These cells were then exposed for 18 hours to 10 nm illumination bands centered from 390 to 520 nm in 10 nm increments (+ illumination band centered at 630 nm). To mimic physiological light conditions, light irradiances were moderate and normalized with respect to the natural sunlight reaching the retina. (Arnault et al., 2013 PLOs One).

WHERE IS HARMFUL BLUE LIGHT FOUND?

Harmful blue light is everywhere. It is indoors and outdoors, from both the sun & modern internal lighting (blue light emitted by the sun is why the sky appears blue).In fact, the sun emits over 100x the intensity of harmful blue light than electronic devices and digital screens.

Outdoors, we’re exposed to high-intensity harmful blue light from the sun. (Squinting is our body’s natural defence against harsh light and bright glare.) Indoors, we’re exposed to harmful blue light from modern LED lighting our screens, LED displays and digital devices.
